The global mobility sector is undergoing an unprecedented transformation. Driven by electrification, and the sustained rise of connected, autonomous, and shared mobility technologies, we are at an inflection point — one that could well define our shared future.

In recent years, vehicle electrification has made significant advances, with the growing availability of battery technologies and the increased power of new hardware paired with robust software. However, the shift toward electrification continues to fall short of expectations.

While internal combustion engine vehicles contribute to 20%-30% of total greenhouse gas emissions, Electric Vehicles (EVs) offer a sustainable alternative with zero tailpipe emissions. Nevertheless, the increased adoption of EVs remains constrained by factors such as higher vehicle costs, the limited range of affordable options, availability of charging stations in both urban and non-urban areas, and often-lengthy charging times.

Among these challenges, perhaps the most significant drawback is range anxiety.Current trends suggest that the range of an EV is likely to remain limited for a prolonged period due to high battery costs, considerable weight, and the lower energy densities currently achievable. Range anxiety, therefore, continues to be a predominant factor hindering the widespread adoption of EVs.

Worldwide, the automotive industry has been actively researching viable and sustainable solutions to address the challenge of range anxiety. Hybrid vehicles (PHEVs/HEVs) offer a promising solution for improved range but come with the drawback of higher tailpipe emissions.

A range extender on an EV has emerged as a potential mid-point solution, enabling us to harness the advantages of both EVs and HEVs.
